I love the TV series Bones. If you don’t know what its about, the story focuses on how the main female character uses forensic anthropology and forensic archaeology to solve crime. I know its fiction but its based on the pioneering works of a real person, Dr William Bass of the University of Tennessee Anthropological Research Facility. Want to know more? You can go and view more info on their website.
I brought up this point because in one email AWC pointed out to me that :-
You mentioned about who could determine what was original and what was not – our reply is we can. Do you know the process of how archeologists restore certain stuff to its original state? We could do that with the science of body mechanics (and had already done so). That’s why we are confident to show you guys that your understanding of WC are mostly wrong (up to 90%).
Reading this brings tears to my eyes. Tears of mirth as I could not believe what I am reading. Restore to original state? Like digging up Leung Jan’s skeleton and somehow bring it back to life? Or get his DNA and make a clone of Leung Jan?
Let’s say you managed to find the founder of Wing Chun whoever that might be since we don’t really know. One thought at this juncture – if we don’t know who the founder of Wing Chun is how then do we determine that what our analysis of what the original WC is supposed to be would in fact be spot on?
Say you managed to find the founder of the Wing Chun. Since he or she is long dead and you don’t have a video or Youtube video of how he performed, applied and use in a real fight this so-called original WC how do you know your analysis is even correct? So this talk about being able to restore the original state of WC is just that – all talk.
The science of biomechanics can study how the human body works but it cannot study how the body of the founder of WC works since you don’t have a body nor even know who the founder is in the first place. Looking at his descendants is not good enough because you can only rely on the assumption that the standard of performance today is the same or at least as good and that there is no huge amount of deviation in standards over time. So ergo the claim is based on an erroneous assumption.
In martial arts we say got only number one, no number two. This means our style is always the best, the only correct one, blah blah blah. Guess what – this is claim is at best conditional. Otherwise, how do you account for the huge number of styles that are still out there. I mean who in their right mind wants to study the second best style or for that matter the 10th best style or style with no ranking? But that these styles survive means that they have their merits. The problem here is that we may fail to see what the merits are because we don’t have the opportunity to see a really good master demonstrate the skills of the style.
But even if let’s say AWC is 101% correct what does this mean in real life? Does it mean that if they put up 100 fighters against 100 fighters from other so-called wrong WC styles they will have 100 winnings? Or their definition of being correct is just what the medical doctor and researcher says, people who don’t know WC or may know but not master the style so ergo have limited knowledge and really not in a position to pass judgement or give informed opinion.
AWC thinks they are the only ones who have access to doctors. I used to count some doctors as students and half the time they can’t figure out how I did some of the things and even after hearing explanation and seeing a breakdown they still can’t really understand it. So to rely on doctors for verification of how good a person’s WC is come on……… OK, you got me here – this is supposed to be an inside joke right? Moe Alkaff you can come out now. I’ll admit I fell for the GOTCHA prank.
But OK, I know AWC will still insist they are right. No problem with that. Mouth is yours and you can say what you like and some of us really like to give you the benefit of a doubt. In fact, some of the guys on FB is willing to meet cordially so that you can explain and demonstrate your claims. Oh, and I believe Sifu Patrick Tham is still waiting for you to show up at his class to ahem, shut him down. Let’s see, he has a class at Blk 459A Clementi Ave 3 on Wednesday and Thursday from 7.30 pm to 10 pm. Tell us when you are going there so that we have the opportunity to bring along our videos and document conclusively the superiority of AWC and upload to Youtube for the whole world to see how we are 90% wrong. Or email me your training address and times and I am sure Sifu Patrick Tham would be than willing and happy to visit you instead to test your claim of being able to shut him down.
