I must apologize to my readers for these distracting posts on AWC. Blame it on the heat and Mediacorp for the lack of good programming.
Those who don’t learn from history is bound to repeat it. One thing I learned from the TWC conflict is simply why can’t we get along?
I’ve seen and felt a lot of WC up close and personal. I saw many shared traits. Occasionally, I also see some outstanding styles particularly amongst those that are lesser known and not diluted through popularization.
Though we have some well known masters come through and give seminars in Singapore what is lesser known is that there are also outstanding practitioners that pass by on the way somewhere or stay here for a short while to work. One of them was my friend’s master who is a doctor but by then I had lost interest in Wing Chun so I didn’t pursue it. But I always remember this friend and his junior for their interesting brand of WC that has an interesting repertoire of techniques that is not normally seen in many WC.
After seeing so many and trying to reconcile the differences I can conclude that its basically the same main picture I am looking at with differences due to a number of factors. So when AWC comes along and says that every other WC is wrong my first thought was 99% Wong can’t be wrong. So AWC keeps talking about research but how many masters and WC styles have they really looked at, learned from and practice till they meet the minimum standard required for mastery? I think you can guess at the answer judging from the stuff they have shown.
If there is a takeaway lesson here it is that if you want to practice martial arts you need to put in the time and effort. Just going to medical doctors etc to get them to be touchy feely with you just won’t cut it. If you can’t pass the assessment of your own teacher then you are just one of those impatient students who always want to be a top dog but don’t have the patience or determination to put in the hard work but have to resort to such tactics in order to become a master by forming your own obedient, brainwashed group.
