Am I supposed to resist?
This was an interesting question from my student.
I said that I did not tell him he cannot resist. In fact, he can do what he liked to, respond however he likes. So for a short while he tried to react as fast and resist as hard as he could.
With that out of the way I explained that when I trained with him I usually go slow and lighter because the aim of coming for lesson is to learn. But since he brought it up I will show what its like when I do it fast and hard.
Demo over. Brushed the dust off his back and knees and went back to our normal pace.
The objective of learning push hands game is to understand how the game is played like a game of strategy for normal training fun and on the other hand how it can translate across to the learning of how to use the techniques from the form in free combat.
Resistance is expected in training to keep it more realistic, not totally real because then people can get hurt and that’s not an objective of learning.
