I noticed my student kept moving back during push hands because his logic told him that this was how he can avoid me knocking him back.
I asked him what would happen if he kept moving back and then there was no more room to back up. What then?
I made the answer obvious for him when I slowly ate up his space and before he knew it he could not move back any more and still had to ping pong off the wall.
When teaching I always hear “interesting” seemingly logical answers from students to justify what they do. In my mind if it is that simple why would they need me to teach them?
The thing about Taiji is that a lot of things are not obvious. There are a lot of seemingly illogical things that only make sense to those who managed to get a leg into the gate of understanding.
Until then one need to be careful that one’s logic is not full of holes and leaves one open up to attacks.
