I wrote a comment on Ng Chan Wing Chun Facebook Group today. I am posting it here as I want to add pictures to illustrate what I mean. Comment below in bold italics :-
I am not trying to pick an argument here but until one has researched traditional CMA properly one should be careful about condemning TCMA.
For example the mention of standing on steel line is nothing new. In Dong taiji we have a teaching of heel facing heel which basically is what I call like standing on a single line. Just go take a look at the picture of GM Tung Hulin on the main page of my blog. This photo was taken in 1970 if I am not wrong. Below are pictures of a Taiji class circa 1970 – just observe the position of the feet – I have added in a red line to make it obvious.
Then the writer claims that WC asks going through but traditional kung fu asks hitting on target. This is another misinformation that does disservice to traditional kung fu. Just read GM Wei’s book on taiji particularly the section on fajing and attacking the point on the back. If this is not going through then what is hitting through. Below is the explanation from GM Wei’s book that I am referring to :-
IMHO for one to say that traditional kung fu is wrong is to say that the person who eats more salt than you eat rice is correct when TCMA already has many principles and concepts more advanced what one sees in the current Ip Man WC. The problem is that one does not know that one does not know and keeps thinking that one is smart and knows when one is totally ignorant. I can understand this mindset of WC superiority as I once suffered this mental ailment too.
After climbing out of the well of my mental imprisonment I realized that I was wrong and that there are so many more things in TCMA that people in WC don’t know about. The issue here is do you dare to question your own teacher and style and my guess is many people are frightened to especially after they have invested years of practice and tuition fee not to mention their current ranking and standing in the lineage. Its not easy to turn your back and give up everything in the pursuit of the greater truth. This is the mind trap of the lineage self perception disorder.
Lastly, to jump in on Zananiri’s question – there is an easy way to test this. Try sitting in a chair and do a demo like that shown by GM Wang in the video in one of the posts on my WordPress blog except to make it more interesting you can put a scale under your legs to see if you press down on the ground when issuing power. Note – video does not appear in original post on Facebook.
You can say I am wrong but can you say that Nature as explained by the principles of physics are wrong? It would be interesting to hear something try to debunk it. Even GM Wei with his seemingly effortless fajing has to tap ground connection. And of course I would love to see if this WC style can issue power as effortlessly as GM Wei.
OK, getting off my soap box now. I’ve said what I want to say. Shoot me all you want. I will not say any more.
